Money Matters #2The second in this series will be preached on at 10.15 on the 26th October and at 7pm on the 19th October. 1. What do you think are the most common problems for Christians that you know when it comes to money? (The ones I’ve thought of dealing with in this study are – just being caught up with wanting more money and all it can do for us – being so caught up in all the things money can buy; not getting ourselves organised when it comes to giving away any money and not being reliable to give regularly in the long term; a heart reaction that’s not deep enough to make generosity part of our lives. There may be other things that come up.) 2. Read 1 Timothy 6: 6-10 for some sobering thoughts on lack of contentment and the love of money.
3. Read 2 Cor. 8: 10-12 and 9: 1-5 (The Corinthian church had agreed to contribute to the money being collected for the poor in the Jerusalem church – impacted by a terrible famine – but had failed to get their act together.)
4. From 1 Cor 16: 1-4, what practical suggestions had Paul given the Corinthians about how they might get their money organised? Can you think of other practical ways that would help us organise our finances? 5. Generosity is really a heart response put into action. a. Read 2 Cor 8: 1-5. What is so admirable about the Macedonian churches? b. Read 2 Cor 9: 6-7 What attitude is encouraged here? 6. Encourage each person to set aside some time in the next month to examine their lives in this area, to go over the decisions they are making about money and to see if they want to make any changes. Then to act on whatever they decide. They might like to read 2 Cor 8 and 9 as two chapters that have a lot to say about generosity.
