Money Matters #1This is the first of two studies about our use of money. These studies and talks come in response to people suggesting we have some teaching on this after the church wardens came and spoke to the various congregations about our financial situation. The first in this series will be preached at 10.15 and 7pm on the 12th October. 1. If you were to list some core attitudes about money that exist among the people you associate with at work and in your neighbourhood, what would they be. Try and come up with a list of 4 or 5. Might be good to put them up on a sheet to refer to. Doing this also gives people time to think about it. 2. Make another list. What do you see as the core things the Bible says about our attitude to money if we are disciples of Jesus? Try and think of big picture things here, not the practical ways of how we give. Once again put this on a sheet – perhaps coming up with about 4-5. 3. Does anything stand out to you as you compare the two lists? 4. Read the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19: 1-10. Are there ways that Zacchaeus illustrates attitudes/principles you have in the first and in the second list? 5. What areas of responsibility do we need to be aware of as we think about our money? The following verses might help as you consider this. 1 Tim 5:8 and Mark 7: 9-13 (Corban was money devoted to the temple – these leaders were accumulating wealth for the temple coffers and stopping people using it to care for their parents.); Galatians 6:6 and 9-10; Phil. 4: 14-16; 1 John 3: 16-17. 6. What do you think is the biggest challenge for Christians in your circle of friends regarding the use of money? What do you find the biggest challenge?
