Study #5 - Samson The Samson story is a long one, and the aim of this study is to give a brief overview of events. It would be really helpful if everyone could read chapters 13-16 beforehand. Israel has reached the point in their rebellion from God that they don’t even cry out for mercy in this section (14:4). Instead God chooses to work through a wayward and headstrong man. Samson was a strange man, but as we have seen, these were strange times were God operated in unusual ways to bring about his purposes and his glory. He lived in a time when the Philistines oppressed the land. They were not as cruel as the Moabites, Canaanites, Midianites, and Ammonites. The Philistine threat in fact was rather insidious to start with. They infiltrated through intermarriage and trade. It was into this environment of apathetic acceptance of the Philistines that Samson emerges to wage a one man war on them.
We are going to use these to give an overview of Samson’s life. 1 God sets apart Judges 13: 1-7, 24-25 2 Disobedience Judges 14: 1-7, 15; 15:11-15 3 Oppression Judges 16: 1-5, 15-21 4 God rescues Judges 16: 25-31 3 Read the passages and write or draw the events that happen. 4 Each group to give their account of events 5 How does the story of Samson add to your understanding of faithfulness of God? 6 Does the birth announcement of Samson remind you of similar announcements of great rescuers in the bible? How does Samson compare with them? 7 What does wanting to be “just like the others” and not “set apart” look like in your life? 8 What have you learnt about faith in God from Samson?
