The heart of Paul #4 - A passion for the lost

Without telling the group the topic for this week – recap and ask –

So far – we have looked at the heart of Paul in the areas of his – perseverance; innocence; weakness.

If you had to come up with another area that showed us something that was key to the heart of Paul, what would it be?

(some possibilities might be – be a servant of God; the growth of churches; etc.)

Perhaps someone might come up with – a heart or passion for the lost ie to see people become Christians. This is the topic for this study.

Why would a man give up everything to spend the rest of his life as an itinerant preacher?

1.      Acts 9 recounts Paul’s conversion. After encountering Jesus on the road to Damscus, he is visited by Ananias. Read Acts 9:10-30.

If you were trying to describe Paul in this initial period after his conversion, what would you say about WHY he proclaimed Jesus and what his proclamation was like?

2.      Read Romans 9: 1-5 which is a long reflection by Paul on the Jewish people and their negative response to Christ.

From these verses, what would you want to add to the description of Paul as one who proclaimed Christ?

3.      Paul was an apostle commissioned by God, as we saw in Acts 9:15. Some aspects of his life are particular to that ministry and some are more general in nature.

From Romans 1: 8-10 and 14-16, what do you think relates to Paul only and what can we learn that relates to us as well?

4.      Read 2 Corinthians 5: 14- 6: 2.

a.       What compels Paul to share the message of Jesus? Find as many reasons as you can in this passage.

b.      Do you think any one of the reasons stand out from the others?

c.       What do you find most motivates you to share Christ?

5.      Thinking about Paul’s life from this study, what stands out to you most about the heart of Paul?
